  • Greek children of war - paidomazoma and the return home

In the text "Greek children of war - paidomazoma and the return home" the problem of Greek children deported after the Greek Civil War (1944-1949) to communist countries is presented. The research was undertaken on the autobiographic level. The programme of children's deportation undertaken by the Greek Communist Party began in the early spring of 1948 and included around 25-30 thousand Macedonian and Greek children between the ages of 3 to 14. The children were sent to socialist countries. Their repatriation began in 1974 and continues to take place until today. The biggest number of repatriated persons today returns from the former Soviet Union. They are also the ones who find the adjustment to the Greek life the most difficult. They don't know Greek, the principles of the free market or the Greek style of life. The Greek government does not take care of the repatriated persons - neither those coming from Central European countries nor those from the former USSR. The government has no money, nor ideas how to tackle that issue. Contemporary Greeks return to their homeland with a feeling of being forgotten, emotionally deprived, unwanted and even hated by their countrymen
